Settings on mobile

Settings is where you tune how TalkWriter listens, writes, and behaves on your phone — languages, your default writing tone, your account, and the permissions the app needs. This page walks through each option and notes which ones sync across your devices and which stay local to this device.

Available on: iOS 16+ and Android 10+

Language​

  • Spoken / input language — the language you speak when you dictate. Set this to match how you'll talk so TalkWriter transcribes accurately.
  • Writing language — the language TalkWriter writes in. When it differs from your spoken language, TalkWriter translates in real time — dictate in one language and get text in another. (Same spoken and writing language means no translation.) This is also where Banglish comes in: speak or type romanized Bangla and get proper Bangla script.

You can also set language on the fly from the language chip in the keyboard's top bar, and a Native/Roman tone chip appears during dictation. See Writing language & Banglish for the full picture.

TalkTone defaults​

Choose the default style and tone TalkWriter uses when you rewrite text — for example Professional, Friendly, Concise, or Confident. You can still override the tone, style, and intensity each time you rewrite from the keyboard; this just sets your starting point. More in TalkTone on mobile.

Account​

Manage the account you signed in with (Apple, Google, or email). The same account is shared across Mac, iOS, and Android, so your meetings, dictionary, snippets, and dictation history follow you. For plan and billing specifics, see the Pro plan docs.

Permissions​

TalkWriter needs a couple of system permissions to work fully:

  • Microphone — required for dictation and meeting recording.
  • Notifications — used for recording status and recap messages.

The exact setup differs by platform — on iOS the keyboard also needs Allow Full Access, and on Android you enable the keyboard as an input method and grant Microphone:

Recording reliably in the background

On Android, also set TalkWriter's battery usage to Unrestricted so meeting recording doesn't get killed in the background — including the per-manufacturer steps in the Android setup guide.

Sign out​

Sign out of your account on this device from Settings. Your synced data — meetings, dictionary, snippets, and history — stays safely in your account and returns when you sign back in.

What syncs vs. what's local​

Settings are device-local

Your settings (languages, TalkTone defaults, permissions) live on this device and aren't synced. Set them per device. Your content — meetings, dictionary, snippets, and dictation history — does sync across Mac, iPhone, and Android through your account.

FAQs​

I changed a setting on my phone but my Mac didn't update. That's expected — settings are device-local, so each device keeps its own. Adjust them separately on each device. (Meetings, dictionary, and snippets do sync.)

What's the difference between spoken language and writing language? Spoken is the language you talk in; writing is the language TalkWriter outputs. Set them differently to translate as you dictate.

Dictation or recording isn't working. Check that Microphone is granted (and, on iOS, that the keyboard has Full Access). Use the platform setup guides linked above.

Will signing out delete my data? No. Your synced content stays in your account and comes back when you sign in again.
