Understanding the Pill Overlay
The pill overlay is TalkWriter's most innovative UI element. It is a small, dark floating indicator that appears on your screen during dictation -- and it does far more than just show status. Hover over it to access quick controls for switching languages and dictation modes, all without opening the TalkWriter app.
Why the Pill Exists
Every dictation app needs to answer one question: "Is it listening to me right now?" Most apps answer this by making you look at a window or a menu bar icon -- which means taking your eyes off your work.
The pill solves this differently. It floats directly in your workspace, visible at a glance no matter what app you are in. You never need to look away from what you are doing to check dictation status. And because it supports hover controls, it also eliminates the need to open TalkWriter's settings window for the two most common mid-workflow adjustments: switching your language and switching between PTT and Live mode.
The result: you can start dictating, check status, change settings, and finish -- all without leaving your current app.
What Is the Pill?
The pill is a rounded, compact overlay that floats above all other windows. Think of it as a heads-up display for your voice: it tells you when TalkWriter is listening, when it is processing, and when text has been pasted. It stays out of your way while giving you everything you need at a glance.
The pill always uses a dark appearance regardless of your system theme. This ensures it is visible on any background -- light or dark.
Pill States Reference
The pill changes its appearance to reflect what TalkWriter is doing at each moment:
| State | Appearance | Meaning | What to Do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | Dark pill, animated waveform | TalkWriter is actively recording your voice | Keep speaking naturally |
| Processing | Dark pill, spinning indicator | Your speech is being transcribed and polished | Wait a moment for results |
| Success | Dark pill, checkmark flash | Polished text has been inserted at your cursor | Text appeared -- you are done |
| Error | Dark pill, warning icon | Something went wrong (no internet, mic issue) | Check your connection or microphone |
| Word Count Warning | Dark pill, counter badge | You are approaching your weekly word limit (Free plan) | Consider upgrading to Pro |
Hover Controls: The Pill's Hidden Power
This is what makes the pill more than a status indicator. When you hover your mouse over the pill during dictation, it expands to reveal quick-access controls:
Switch Language
Hover over the pill to see the current speech language. Click to cycle through your configured languages or select a different one. This is essential when you dictate in multiple languages throughout the day -- you can switch from English to Spanish to Bengali without ever opening Settings.
Switch Dictation Mode
Hover to see whether you are in Push-to-Talk (PTT) or Live mode. Click to toggle between them. This is useful when you start a quick PTT dictation but realize you want to keep talking -- switch to Live mode on the fly.
Traditional dictation apps make you dig through settings to change your language or mode. TalkWriter's pill lets you do it in one hover and one click -- while you are actively dictating. This is the difference between a tool that interrupts your workflow and one that fits into it.
Practical Example: The Pill in Action
Scenario: You are writing an email in Gmail and need to dictate a paragraph in English, then switch to Bengali (Banglish) for a follow-up message to a colleague.
- Click into Gmail's compose field.
- Hold Fn -- the pill appears with an animated waveform, confirming it is listening.
- Dictate your English paragraph. The waveform bounces with your voice.
- Release Fn -- the pill shows a spinner (processing), then a checkmark (success). Text appears in Gmail.
- Now hover over the pill. You see the current language (English) and mode (PTT).
- Click to switch the language to Bengali.
- Hold Fn again and dictate in Bengali. The pill confirms it is listening.
- Release Fn -- Banglish text appears in Gmail.
You switched languages without leaving Gmail, without opening Settings, without breaking your flow.
Pill Behavior by Dictation Mode
| Behavior | Push-to-Talk (PTT) | Live Mode |
|---|---|---|
| When pill appears | When you hold Fn | When you toggle Fn on |
| When pill disappears | When you release Fn and text is pasted | When you toggle Fn off and text is pasted |
| During silence | Pill stays active (still holding Fn) | Pill stays active (listening for more speech) |
| Audio feedback | Waveform animates with your voice | Waveform animates with your voice |
Reading the Waveform
When TalkWriter is in the Listening state, the pill shows an animated waveform. This gives you real-time visual feedback:
- Tall peaks -- TalkWriter is clearly hearing your voice. Keep speaking.
- Flat line -- TalkWriter is not detecting audio. Speak louder or check your microphone.
- Small fluctuations -- Background noise is present but no clear speech detected. Move to a quieter location or speak closer to your microphone.
The waveform is your best diagnostic tool. If the waveform is flat when you speak, the problem is always microphone-related (wrong input selected, volume too low, or mic muted). Check System Settings > Sound > Input to verify your microphone.
The Pill Works Everywhere
The pill overlay floats above all windows, which means it is visible no matter what app you are using:
| App | Pill Works? |
|---|---|
| Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Arc | ✅ |
| VS Code, Cursor, IntelliJ | ✅ |
| Slack, Discord, Telegram | ✅ |
| Google Docs, Notion, Obsidian | ✅ |
| Terminal, iTerm2 | ✅ |
| Full-screen apps | ✅ |
Whether you are coding in VS Code, chatting in Slack, or writing in Google Docs, the pill is right there -- showing status and offering controls.
Pill Position
The pill appears at a fixed position near the top of your screen. It is designed to stay out of the way of common UI elements like menu bars, toolbars, and close buttons.
Even if you hide the pill in Settings, TalkWriter still works normally. The pill is a visual aid and control surface, not a requirement for dictation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move the pill to a different position on the screen? The pill position is set by TalkWriter. It is designed to stay out of the way of common UI elements.
The pill is not appearing when I press Fn. Why? Make sure TalkWriter is running (check for its icon in the menu bar). Also verify the pill overlay is enabled in Settings > Appearance.
Can I make the pill bigger? The pill size is fixed to remain unobtrusive. It is designed to be noticeable without blocking your work.
Does the pill consume battery? The pill overlay uses minimal resources. It has negligible impact on battery life.
Can I use the hover controls to switch to any language? Yes. The hover controls give you access to your configured languages. Set up your preferred languages in Settings, and they will be available through the pill.
What if I don't want the pill? You can disable it in Settings > Appearance. Dictation works the same without it -- you just lose the visual feedback and hover controls.
