Android tips & tricks

The Android keyboard records your voice directly, so dictation is instant. These tips help you make it your everyday keyboard and keep it reliable in the background.

Set TalkWriter as your default keyboard​

So you don't switch every time:

  • Set TalkWriter as your default in Settings → System → Languages & input → On‑screen keyboard → Manage keyboards, or in your phone's Keyboard list and default screen.
  • To switch on the fly, long‑press the spacebar or tap the input‑switch icon and choose TalkWriter Keyboard.

Push‑to‑talk vs tap​

There are two ways to drive the mic — pick whatever fits the moment:

  • Push‑to‑talk: press and hold the mic, speak, and release to stop. Great for quick, hands‑on bursts.
  • Tap to toggle: tap the mic to start, tap again to stop. Better for longer dictation when you don't want to hold.

Grey and thin means idle, green with bars means it's listening, and red means an error (check your connection and microphone permission).

Live typing — words appear as you speak​

On Android, dictation is live: words show up as you talk, instead of all at once at the end. It feels fast and lets you see TalkWriter keeping up in real time. Automatic punctuation and filler‑word removal clean things up as you go.

Keep it running: battery optimization​

Android's power management can pause background apps, which can interrupt dictation or meeting recording.

  • Set TalkWriter to Unrestricted: Settings → Apps → TalkWriter → Battery.
  • On stock Android (Pixel) this usually isn't needed.

Per‑manufacturer background reliability​

Heavily customized skins add extra restrictions. Apply the note for your brand:

  • Samsung (One UI): make sure TalkWriter is not in Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps.
  • Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO (MIUI/HyperOS): turn Autostart on and set the battery saver to No restrictions.
  • Oppo / Realme / OnePlus (ColorOS): allow background activity and auto‑launch.
  • Huawei (EMUI): set power usage to Manage manually and enable all toggles.
Recording shows a notification

While a meeting records, Android shows a foreground‑service notification with a live preview — that's expected and means recording is healthy.

Do I have to switch to TalkWriter every time? No — set it as your default keyboard once, and Android remembers your choice per app.
