How Banglish Works
Banglish requires TalkWriter Pro or Enterprise. Upgrade to Pro â
Understanding how Banglish works under the hood helps you get better results and troubleshoot issues. This page explains the full pipeline from your spoken words to romanized output.
The Processing Pipelineâ
Banglish mode processes your speech through three stages:
Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3
ââââââââââââ ââââââââââââââââ âââââââââââââââ
â You Speak â â â Native STT â â â AI â â Banglish Output
â (Bengali) â â (Bengali â â Romanization â
â â â Script) â â (Latin â
â â â â â Letters) â
ââââââââââââ ââââââââââââââââ âââââââââââââââ
Stage 1: Speech Inputâ
You speak in your native language (Bengali, Hindi, Arabic, etc.). The microphone captures your audio just like any dictation.
Stage 2: Native Speech-to-Text (STT)â
TalkWriter's speech recognition engine transcribes your speech into the native script first. For Bengali, this means your words become Bengali script text internally.
Why native first? Because speech recognition is most accurate when it knows the target language. Trying to directly convert Bengali speech into Latin letters produces much worse results.
Stage 3: AI Romanizationâ
An AI model takes the native script text and converts it into romanized Latin letters. This is the "Banglish" step -- it uses AI to produce natural-sounding romanization that matches how people actually type.
Why AI? Because romanization is not a simple letter-by-letter conversion. The same Bengali character might be romanized differently depending on context, and there are multiple valid romanization styles. AI produces romanization that reads naturally.
Translation vs Transliteration: Visual Comparisonâ
These two concepts are fundamentally different. Understanding the difference is key to understanding Banglish.
Translation (What Other Apps Do)â
Bengali Speech â "āĶāĶŪāĶŋ āĶŽāĶūāĶāĶūāͰ⧠āĶŊāĶūāĶŽā§" â "I will go to the market"
(Bengali) (English)
Translation changes the language. Your Bengali becomes English. The meaning is preserved, but your language is gone.
Transliteration (What Banglish Does)â
Bengali Speech â "āĶāĶŪāĶŋ āĶŽāĶūāĶāĶūāͰ⧠āĶŊāĶūāĶŽā§" â "Ami bazare jabo"
(Bengali) (Bengali in Latin letters)
Transliteration changes the alphabet. Your Bengali stays Bengali -- it just gets written in Latin letters. The language is preserved.
Side-by-Side Comparisonâ
| Aspect | Translation | Transliteration (Banglish) |
|---|---|---|
| Changes the language | â Yes -- becomes English | â No -- stays in your language |
| Changes the alphabet | â Yes -- Latin letters | â Yes -- Latin letters |
| Preserves your words | â No -- new English words | â Yes -- your words in new letters |
| Cultural nuance kept | â Often lost in translation | â Preserved completely |
| Slang and idioms | â Translated or dropped | â Kept as-is |
| Who understands it | Anyone who reads English | Anyone who speaks your language |
Why This Pipeline Mattersâ
The three-stage pipeline (Speech > Native Script > Romanization) is better than alternative approaches:
| Approach | Accuracy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| â Speech â Direct Latin | Low | Speech recognizer doesn't know which Latin letters to map to |
| â Speech â English â Latin | Low | Loses the original language entirely (translation, not transliteration) |
| â Speech â Native Script â AI Latin | High | Each stage is optimized for its task |
What the AI Romanization Handlesâ
The AI romanization model does more than simple character mapping:
| Challenge | How AI Handles It |
|---|---|
| Multiple valid spellings | Picks the most natural romanization (e.g., "kemon" vs "kamon" for āĶā§āĶŪāĶĻ) |
| Context-dependent sounds | Same letter romanized differently based on surrounding letters |
| Common Banglish conventions | Follows how real people actually type Banglish, not academic romanization |
| Mixed-language input | Handles Bengali-English code-switching naturally |
| Proper nouns | Recognizes names and places, romanizes them conventionally |
With TalkTone (Optional Stage 4)â
When TalkTone is enabled, there is a fourth stage:
Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4
Speech â Native Script â AI Romanization â TalkTone Styling â Final Output
In Stage 4, TalkTone takes the romanized Banglish text and applies your chosen style (Romantic, Professional, Formal, etc.) while keeping the text in Banglish.
See TalkTone with Banglish for examples.
Accuracy Factorsâ
The pipeline's accuracy depends on several factors:
| Factor | Impact | How to Optimize |
|---|---|---|
| Speech clarity | High | Speak clearly at a natural pace |
| Background noise | High | Use in a quiet environment or with a good microphone |
| Language selection | Critical | Must be set manually to the correct language |
| Microphone quality | Medium | Built-in laptop mic works, external mic is better |
| Speech speed | Medium | Natural pace is best -- not too fast, not too slow |
