Word Count Tracking
TalkWriter tracks your word count so you always know how much you have dictated and how close you are to your plan's limit.
Why Word Count Tracking Exists
On the Free plan, you have a 2,000 words per week allowance. Word count tracking shows you exactly where you stand so you can pace your usage or decide when to upgrade to Pro (unlimited). Even on Pro, the word count gives you a sense of your dictation productivity over time.
What TalkWriter Tracks
| Metric | Where to See It | Available On |
|---|---|---|
| Words this week | App sidebar / pill overlay badge | Free and Pro |
| Words remaining (Free plan) | App sidebar | Free only |
| Session word count | After each dictation | Free and Pro |
| Word count warning | Pill overlay badge | Free only (when approaching limit) |
How It Works
Every time you complete a dictation, TalkWriter counts the words in the polished output and adds them to your weekly total. The counter resets every Monday.
Free Plan
- 2,000 words per week allowance.
- The app sidebar shows your current count and remaining words.
- When you approach the limit, the pill overlay displays a warning badge.
- When you hit the limit, dictation pauses until the counter resets on Monday.
Pro Plan
- Unlimited words -- no cap, no warnings.
- Word count is still tracked for your reference, but there is no limit enforced.
Practical Example
Scenario: It is Wednesday and you are on the Free plan.
- Monday: You dictated 600 words (emails).
- Tuesday: You dictated 800 words (a document draft).
- Total so far: 1,400 words. You have 600 words remaining this week.
- The app shows: "1,400 / 2,000 words used."
If you need to dictate a long report on Thursday, you may hit the limit. You can either pace your remaining words or upgrade to Pro for unlimited dictation.
If you are consistently hitting the 2,000 word limit by midweek, that is a strong signal that Pro will pay for itself. At $9.99/month with unlimited words, the cost per word becomes negligible for daily dictators.
FAQ
When does the weekly counter reset? Every Monday at midnight (based on your local timezone).
Does the word count include raw transcription or polished output? The word count is based on the polished output -- the text that gets pasted into your app.
Can I see my word count history over time? You can review past dictation sessions in the session history. Each session shows the word count for that dictation.
Does using the Scratchpad count toward my word limit? Yes. Any dictation that goes through TalkWriter's speech-to-text pipeline counts toward your weekly limit, regardless of whether it pastes into an external app or the Scratchpad.
