Poor Accuracy
Symptom
TalkWriter transcribes your speech, but the text contains frequent errors — wrong words, missing words, or garbled output.
Quick Fix
Move to a quieter environment and speak at a natural pace, not too fast or too slow.
Step-by-Step Diagnostic
Use this decision tree to find the cause:
✅ Step 1: Check Your Microphone
A poor microphone is the most common cause of bad accuracy.
- Open System Settings → Sound → Input
- Speak and watch the input level meter
- If the level is very low, your microphone may be too far away or muted
- If the level is maxed out (clipping), your microphone is too loud — move it further away
| Microphone Type | Expected Accuracy | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook built-in | Good | Works well in quiet rooms |
| AirPods / headset | Better | Mic is closer to your mouth |
| USB condenser mic | Best | Ideal for noisy environments |
| Speakerphone | Poor | Too far from your mouth |
✅ Step 2: Check Your Language Setting
- Open TalkWriter Settings
- Go to the Dictation tab
- Verify the Language is set correctly (e.g., English US, English UK, Bangla)
- If you are speaking a different language than what is selected, accuracy will be very low
✅ Step 3: Check Your Speaking Speed
- Too fast — Words get merged or dropped
- Too slow — Unnatural pauses may be interpreted as sentence breaks
- Just right — Speak at the pace you would use in a normal conversation
✅ Step 4: Reduce Background Noise
Background noise confuses the speech engine:
- Close windows to block street noise
- Turn off fans, music, or TV
- Use a headset microphone in noisy environments (isolates your voice)
- Avoid dictating in crowded spaces
✅ Step 5: Add Words to Your Custom Dictionary
If TalkWriter consistently gets specific words wrong (names, technical terms, acronyms):
- Open TalkWriter Settings
- Go to the Dictionary tab
- Click Add Word
- Type the word exactly as you want it transcribed
- Optionally add a pronunciation hint
✅ Step 6: Check Your Internet Connection
TalkWriter processes speech on remote servers. A slow or unstable connection causes:
- Words appearing out of order
- Long delays before text appears
- Partial transcriptions
Test your connection:
- Open a browser and go to fast.com
- You need at least 5 Mbps upload for reliable dictation
- If your connection is slow, switch to a stronger Wi-Fi network or use Ethernet
Accuracy Tips Summary
| Factor | Impact | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone quality | ⚡ High | Use a headset or external mic |
| Background noise | ⚡ High | Dictate in a quiet environment |
| Speaking speed | ⚡ Medium | Natural conversational pace |
| Language setting | ⚡ High | Match your spoken language |
| Internet speed | ⚡ Medium | 5+ Mbps upload |
| Custom dictionary | ⚡ Medium | Add names and jargon |
Still Not Working?
- Try dictating a simple sentence like "The quick brown fox" to test baseline accuracy
- If baseline accuracy is also poor, the issue is likely your microphone or internet connection
