Remote Desktop

TalkWriter can work with remote desktop environments, but there are some important setup steps and known limitations. This guide covers Citrix, Microsoft RDP, and other VDI solutions.

How It Works

TalkWriter runs on your local Mac. It captures your voice, processes it, and pastes text using Cmd+V. In a remote desktop session, this paste action is forwarded to the remote machine through clipboard sharing.

The flow:

  1. You dictate on your local Mac
  2. TalkWriter transcribes your speech
  3. TalkWriter copies the text to your Mac's clipboard
  4. TalkWriter simulates Cmd+V
  5. The remote desktop client forwards the paste to the remote machine
  6. Text appears in the remote application

Setup Requirements

For TalkWriter to work with remote desktop:

  • Clipboard sharing must be enabled between your Mac and the remote session
  • TalkWriter must be running on the local Mac (not inside the remote session)
  • The remote desktop window must be in focus when you dictate
  • A text field inside the remote session must be selected

FAQ

Can I install TalkWriter inside the remote desktop? TalkWriter is macOS-only. If your remote session runs Windows or Linux, TalkWriter must run on your local Mac and use clipboard sharing to paste.

Does my IT admin need to configure anything? They need to ensure clipboard sharing is enabled in the VDI policy. No other server-side configuration is needed.

Is there additional latency? There is a small delay (100-500ms) for clipboard sync between your Mac and the remote session. For most use cases, this is not noticeable.
