The Pill as Your Notification System

TalkWriter does not use traditional macOS notification banners. Instead, the pill overlay serves as your primary notification system -- showing dictation status, errors, and word count warnings directly in your workspace.

Why the Pill Instead of Notifications?

Traditional notifications interrupt your work. A banner slides in, you read it, you dismiss it, and you have lost focus for 5-10 seconds. TalkWriter's pill is always visible at a glance, never requires dismissal, and never steals focus from your current app. It is the difference between a notification that demands attention and a status indicator that provides it.

Practical Example

Scenario: You are writing a report in Google Docs and dictating paragraphs.

  1. You hold Fn. The pill appears with a waveform -- you know dictation is active.
  2. You release Fn. The pill shows a spinner -- you know it is processing.
  3. The pill flashes a checkmark -- text has been pasted. You glance at the pill for half a second to confirm.
  4. Later, the pill shows a counter badge -- you are at 1,800 / 2,000 words for the week. Time to think about upgrading.

You never left Google Docs. No banners appeared. No clicks were required.

Pro Tip

If you want to know your exact word count at any time, check the app sidebar. The pill badge only appears when you are approaching the limit, not as a constant counter.

FAQ

Can I enable traditional macOS notifications instead of the pill? TalkWriter does not currently have a traditional notification system. The pill overlay is the primary feedback mechanism.

Can I disable the pill? Yes. Go to Settings > Appearance and toggle the pill off. Dictation still works, but you will not see visual feedback during recording and processing.

What if I miss the pill's warning about my word limit? The pill shows the warning badge each time you dictate when you are near the limit. You can also check your exact count anytime in the app sidebar.
