Configuration AirPods et Bluetooth
AirPods and Bluetooth headsets work with TalkWriter for wireless dictation. Ce guide covers setup, audio codec quality, and troubleshooting for the best experience.
Setup Steps
Étape 1 : Pair Your Bluetooth Device
- Open System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Put your AirPods or headset in pairing mode.
- Find the device in the list and click Connect.
If your AirPods are already paired with your iPhone and signed into the same iCloud account, they may appear automatically on votre Mac.
Étape 2 : Set as Input Device
- Open System Settings > Sound > Input.
- Select your AirPods or Bluetooth headset from the input device list.
- Speak and verify the Input Level meter responds.
Étape 3 : Verify in TalkWriter
- Ouvrez TalkWriter and press Fn to start a test dictation.
- Speak a sentence and release Fn.
- Confirm text appears. If so, your setup is complete.
Audio Codec Quality Comparison
Bluetooth audio quality depends on the codec used. When a Bluetooth device is used as both input and output (mic + speaker), macOS often switches to a lower-quality codec.
| Codec | Audio Quality | When It's Used | Dictation Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAC | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ High | Audio output only (listening to music) | N/A — mic not active |
| SBC | ⭐⭐⭐ Medium | Fallback when AAC is not supported | Moderate — acceptable for dictation |
| SCO (HFP) | ⭐⭐ Low | When microphone is active (calls, dictation) | Lower quality — may affect accuracy |
When you use AirPods as a microphone, macOS switches from the high-quality AAC codec to the lower-quality SCO/HFP codec. This is a macOS limitation, not a TalkWriter issue. Accuracy may be slightly lower compared to a USB microphone.
Device-Specific Tips
AirPods (3rd Gen) & AirPods Pro
- Accuracy is good for standard dictation. Nont as precise as a USB headset.
- Keep AirPods charged above 20% for stable Bluetooth connection.
- If one AirPod is in the case, the other's mic is used automatically.
AirPods Max
- Over-ear design provides better mic isolation than in-ear AirPods.
- Slightly better accuracy than standard AirPods due to multiple microphones.
Third-Party Bluetooth Headsets
- Quality varies by manufacturer. Headsets with boom microphones (like Jabra or Plantronics) generally outperform in-ear designs.
- Ensure your headset supports the HFP (Hands-Gratuit Profile) Bluetooth profile for mic input on macOS.
Dépannage
| Problem | Likely Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| TalkWriter does not hear me | Wrong input device selected | Check System Settings > Sound > Input and select your Bluetooth device |
| Audio keeps cutting out | Bluetooth interference or low battery | Move closer to votre Mac, charge your device |
| Accuracy is worse than built-in mic | Low codec quality (SCO) | Try a USB headset for better quality, or move to a quieter environment |
| AirPods not appearing as input | Nont connected or connected to another device | Open AirPods case near votre Mac, select from Bluetooth settings |
| Delay between speaking and text | Bluetooth latency | Nonrmal for Bluetooth. If excessive, try reconnecting |
Bonnes pratiques for Bluetooth Dictation
- Charge before long sessions. Low battery causes connection drops.
- Stay within 15 feet of votre Mac. Bluetooth range is limited.
- Close unused Bluetooth connections. Other devices competing for bandwidth can cause interference.
- Consider a USB headset for critical work. When accuracy matters most, wired is more reliable.
- Speak slightly louder. Bluetooth mic sensitivity is often lower than USB mics.
Foire aux questions
Are AirPods good enough for TalkWriter? Oui, for most uses. AirPods provide convenient wireless dictation with good accuracy. For professional or critical work, a USB headset or condenser mic is recommended.
Why does audio quality drop when I use AirPods as a mic? This is a macOS Bluetooth limitation. When the microphone is active, the codec switches from AAC to the lower-quality HFP profile. This affects all apps, not just TalkWriter.
Can I use AirPods for dictation while playing music? Technically possible, but not recommended. Playing audio while recording from the same device increases latency and may reduce accuracy.
Do I need AirPods Pro specifically? Nonn. Any AirPods model or Bluetooth headset works. AirPods Pro offer slightly better noise cancellation but the mic quality for dictation is similar across models.
